DVM, Urgent Care Director

Dr. Elizabeth Hughs (they/them)

Elizabeth Hughs knew as early as second grade that they wanted to be a veterinarian. Starting with a Bachelor's in Zoology from Washington State University, their passion and tenacity helped them graduate as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from St. George's University in Grenada, West Indies in 2009. Upon graduation, Dr. Hughs completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at South Texas Veterinary Specialists in San Antonio, Texas. Homesick for big mountains and grey skies, Dr. Hughs returned to the Pacific Northwest to continue pursuing their interests in emergency care, critical care, internal medicine, and diagnostic imaging.

Dr. Hughs spent their early veterinary years practicing in Emergency and Specialty Practices. They ultimately found that their skills and passion were best utilized at Tacoma Animal Hospital with its walk-in/urgent care style practice alongside daily appointments. Dr. Hughs strives to provide honest, compassionate, and informative medical care while being an advocate for your companion's health, wellness, and quality of life. They continuously seek to improve and learn new skills such as abdominal ultrasound, Global FAST/VetBLUE, and RESCUE.  They are constantly reading and learning about advances in veterinary medicine to ensure they can provide the most accurate and up-to-date care for your loved one.

Dr. Hughs is certified Fear Free and is a Friendly Feline Practice Veterinarian. Being native to this area, Dr. Hughs deeply enjoys a good cup of coffee and has been known to be a gluten-free cookie monster. They and their partner share their home with three selfish feline roommates, none of which have yet to pay rent.
